‘Languages teaching & learning: Perspectives & paths for the future’

Members of MLTASA, of Single Language Associations, and all teachers interested in the future directions for languages in SA schools attended a forum on August 4, 2018 at Uni SA, Magill.



The theme of the day was ‘Languages teaching and learning: Perspectives and paths for the future’

The first session offered the opportunity to hear from leaders in Languages Education policy in SA.  From 9.00 – 11.00  a forum on key directions in Languages education included keynote speakers:

  • The Hon John Gardner MP, Minister for Education
  • Associate Professor Kathleen Heugh, University of South Australia
  • Professor Martin Westwell, Chief Executive, SACE Board of SA
  • Mr Andy Vinter, Manager, Languages Education, Department for Education, SA

The second session was an opportunity to hear from a panel of ‘next generation’ language teachers in schools, and participate in discussions on the future professional learning needs and the role of Professional Associations in advancing the cause of Languages Education in our schools.  From 11.30 – 1.30  Panel Discussion considered the aspirations and professional learning needs of teachers of languages and future leaders in Languages education:

  • Opening address: Dr Michelle Kohler:
    Contemporary policy & practices in Languages Education
  • Panel Participants: Recent graduate teachers from across the state
  • Chair; Miriam Parsons. Discussants: Dr Michelle Kohler, Mr Andrew Scrimgeour
