MLTASA Awards for Excellence 2017


The MLTASA Awards for Excellence will recognise the contributions that members of MLTASA make to the teaching and learning of languages. The awards will be presented in term 4 to coincide with CEASA World Teachers’ Day celebrations on October 29th. Members of MLTASA from any education sector and at any stage of their career are encouraged to apply.

The MLTASA Awards for Excellence will be presented in three categories:

1 MLTASA Award for Excellence: Educational theory and practice

The MLTASA award for excellence in educational theory and practice will be awarded to an educator who engages with current theories of education, who models and promotes inclusive teaching practice and who utilises effective teaching practices which improve learning outcomes for all students.

2 MLTASA Award for Excellence: Promotion of inter-cultural understandings

The MLTASA award for excellence in the promotion of inter-cultural understandings will be awarded to a teacher who has demonstrated outstanding efforts in developing inter-cultural understandings in their students. This teacher has demonstrated ongoing commitment to promoting school/community awareness of the language taught, developing links with background speakers both here and overseas, and encouraging reflection about languages and cultures.


3 MLTASA Award for Excellence: Development of strong professional relationships and contribution to the languages teaching community

The MLTASA award for excellence in developing strong professional relationships and contribution to the languages teaching community, will be awarded to a teacher who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the languages teaching community by establishing and/or maintaining professional relationships with teachers across languages. This teacher is involved in committees, working groups or other networks which assist colleagues in the teaching of languages in South Australia.


Required documentation

A statement needs to accompany each category for which the person is nominated. This must be accompanied by at least three pieces of evidence such as:

  • A supporting statement by colleagues/students/parents in relation to the award
  • A list of professional developments to which the nominee has contributed in some way with outcomes for theory and practice, intercultural understandings or professional relationships as appropriate.
  • A statement of committee roles/tasks, lengths of service verified by a statement from another member of a professional group.
  • Lesson or unit planner with clear connections to one of the award categories.

The panel will be looking for a description of what the applicant has done, how they’ve done it and what the outcomes are. Applicants are encouraged to go to  and for examples of intercultural understandings.

Terms and conditions:

  • Teachers may nominate themselves or be nominated (with consent) by another educator.
  • Nominees must be a current financial member of MLTASA (Individual or corporate membership).
  • If applying for different categories of the award, nominees must apply separately for each
  • A maximum of one award will be awarded in each category.
  • In the event that a number of expressions of interest meet the selection criteria, nominees who are not selected for an award will be awarded a Certificate of Merit, at the discretion of the panel, to be presented at the MLTASA Conference.
  • Nominees are asked to use the application form (below) which can also be downloaded from the MLTASA website:
  • Supporting evidence that you wish to be returned must be clearly labelled with the applicant’s name and contact details. A stamped self-addressed envelope should be enclosed for the return of this supporting evidence.
  • Applications must be submitted by 5pm Friday 21st July 2017.
  • Late applications will not be considered.
  • The principal from the school of each award recipient will be contacted.

Application process post submission:

  • Each application will be assessed individually and recommendations made on merit, by a panel appointed by MLTASA.
  • The decision of the panel will be final and no further discussion will be entered into.
  • The awards will also be formally acknowledged at the MLTASA AGM. Presentations will also take place at the MLTASA AGM on Thursday 15th February 2018.
